How do you care for and clean a dry waxed cotton coat to make it last?
Caring for dry waxed cotton requires minimal effort, but the golden rule is simple: never machine wash, dry clean, or use detergent. Warm water and soaps break down the wax finish and ruin its weatherproofing.
Care Rules
Routine cleaning: Brush off dried dirt using a soft-bristle garment brush. For stubborn spots, wipe the fabric down with a clean sponge or cloth dampened with cold water only.
Storage: Store your coat in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space. Avoid storing it in plastic garment bags or damp environments like humid sheds, as trapped moisture promotes mold.
Re-proofing (every few years): If high-wear areas (elbows, shoulders) start absorbing water rather than letting it bead off, apply a dry wax bar or spray treatment (like Halley Stevensons' Hi-Tex reproofing wax) to restore full waterproofing.
